statement

I am a data analyst and freelance journalist looking for new assignments and partnerships. My goal is to find a position that will utilize and expand on my skills in radio, print, and digital news. I thoroughly appreciate the back end components of the reporting process, including interviewing sources, thorough research and fact-checking. Data visualization is an area I would love to be mentored in.

Business Insider  — Breaking News Fellow
July 2021 - February 2022
During my fellowship, I was required to report on each day's breaking news. This included a vast number of topics, such as mass shootings, Supreme Court decisions, political rallies, deadly weather events, and scientific breakthroughs. I was encouraged to pursue enterprise stories on beats of my interest: policing, housing, and homelessness. I also participated in several collaborative projects, including our Conflicted Congress project, which evaluated the financial compliance of every member of Congress and more than 100 staffers.
Southern California Public Radio —
On-call Assistant Producer
Oct. 2020 - June 2021
I worked on "AirTalk," Southern California Public Radio's leading daily news program. I pitched segments, booked guests, conducted pre-interviews, wrote digital content, and completed background research. During live broadcasts, I fielded calls from listeners and monitored social media.
Daily Journal  — Reporter
March 2020 - May 2020

I covered the general counsel beat at the Daily Journal before I was laid off as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Dailies and general counsel profiles were regularly assigned to me. I also utilized my data journalism knowledge to bring infographics and data visualizations to the paper, which helped to expand our online readership.

Beverly Press — Freelance Reporter & Designer

October 2019 - March 2020

The Beverly Press was a weekly paper where I produced 3-4 stories each week. Additionally, I took photos, attended events and meetings, edited press releases, and used Photoshop to edit images for print and web. I designed 4-6 pages each week and copy edited the paper, which was anywhere between 28-36 pages. After sending proofs to the printer, I would help the two other reporters post all of our articles online and wrote social media posts.
Columbia Missourian — Reporter & Copy Editor

January 2018 - July 2019

As a beat reporter at the Missourian, I followed stories within the city and county government. I fostered open communication with sources through accuracy and fact-checking in order to create a diverse work portfolio. I also worked shifts as an editor for other beat reporters. This position required me to edit pieces from my colleagues along with hand-selecting national and world news to include in our daily.

PolitiFact Missouri  — Reporter & Correspondent

August 2018 - May 2019

My time as a reporter at a PolitiFact taught me to actively seek out story ideas. Everything about the newsroom's hierarchy required me to be a self-starter and set goals to stay on schedule. I also covered three live events, including a Trump rally and Congressional hearing. At the end of my time, I collaborated with our local NPR affiliate, KBIA, to produce radio spots on our fact checks.

Houston Chronicle — Database Designer

August 2018 - April 2019

I was one of a few students from my web design class who were commissioned by the Houston Chronicle for a freelance project. We redesigned their Right to Know database to make the design more accessible and provide a smoother user experience. I wrote a lot of the framework code and collaborated with colleagues on the design elements. The project required me to become familiar with several coding languages including CSS, HTML, and Python.
